‘Quality of education in BEd colleges poor’
Although Ahmedabad is known world over as a hub of premier educational institutes, a close look at the Bachelor of Education (BEd) colleges here is sure to leave you surprised. Last year in October, an inquiry was conducted at 268 BEd colleges to decide on the state's new education policy and it was found that the quality of education was poor. Following this, a notification was issued on January 29 by Commissioner of Higher Education's office (Gandhinagar) citing that due to poor quality of education and lack of proper infrastructure, more than 50 per cent of seats remained vacant in BEd colleges.
The notification, duly signed by Commissioner (higher education) A J Shah, pointed out 'major flaws' in the way these BEd institutions functioned. It was also alleged that self-financed colleges were recruiting teaching staff who did not meet the criteria set by National Council for Teacher Education. The notification reads, "Fee Regulatory Committee had approved the fee structure for private BEd colleges on condition that National Council for Teacher Education guidelines would be followed during teachers' recruitment. Unfortunately, most of the colleges do not have even 50 per cent of permanent staff which is mandatory. And of the appointed staff, many have poor academic records and do not meet the criteria. Any candidate, desiring to teach in these colleges, is required to have 70 per cent in post-graduation and should have cleared National Eligibility Test."
According to the officials involved in the inquiry held in October, "Surprisingly, during verification we came across a list of permanent lecturers whose names appeared in the records of a number of other colleges. This means that either the college authorities had been faking about their teach ers, which are present only on paper, or hire teachers on contract. Besides, it was also revealed that some colleges' role is limited to taking donations and conducting examination; they hardly bother about conducting lectures or appointing quality teachers."
The inquiry committee has also listed 129 colleges under 'No Admission Zone' after observing the poor condition of their infrastructure, library facility and no permanent teaching staff. "I would not be able to share the names of these colleges as the inquiry there is still undery way. Inclusion in 'No Admission Zone' means these colleges will not be included in next year's admission process," an official added.
